Rebirth

At our house right now we have a monarch caterpillar about to form a chrysalis, and a brand spanking new chrysalis. Andrew's friend Ronan is out of town, so Andrew is babysitting Ronan's caterpillar as well as his own. Last night one of the caterpillars attached himself by a thread that looked like a spiderweb, to the top of the jar. all last night he wiggled and wiggled and this morning when we left the house at 10am he was still wiggling but looked pretty much the same.

When we came home, he was done forming his chrysalis and his skin was laying on the bottom of the jar. Now we wait 7 or 8 days...very exciting!

The other guy is done eating and is starting to weave his tether web. By tomorrow he should be in his chrysalis too.

Here is a link to a great video of what happened today, since we missed it. Unfortunately I can't embed it here...

I read this post a day ago, then was listening to Joni Mitchell tonight and suddenly a song I've heard a hundred times before became about your family; especially Andrew.

Funny how art can do that.

Here's "The Circle Game" by Joni; probably one of the 10 greatest musical artists/lyricists of the 20th century.

Thanks for giving new meaning to an old song.

"The Circle Game" -- Joni Mitchell, 1970

Yesterday a child came out to wonder
Caught a dragonfly inside a jar
Fearful when the sky was full of thunder
And tearful at the falling of a star
Then the child moved ten times round the seasons
Skated over ten clear frozen streams
Words like, when you're older, must appease him
And promises of someday make his dreams
And the seasons they go round and round
And the painted ponies go up and down
We're captive on the carousel of time
We can't return we can only look behind
From where we came
And go round and round and round
In the circle game

Sixteen springs and sixteen summers gone now
Cartwheels turn to car wheels thru the town
And they tell him,
Take your time, it won't be long now
Till you drag your feet to slow the circles down
And the seasons they go round and round
And the painted ponies go up and down
We're captive on the carousel of time
We can't return we can only look behind
From where we came
And go round and round and round
In the circle game

So the years spin by and now the boy is twenty
Though his dreams have lost some grandeur coming true
There'll be new dreams, maybe better dreams and plenty
Before the last revolving year is through
And the seasons they go round and round
And the painted ponies go up and down
We're captive on the carousel of time
We can't return, we can only look behind
From where we came
And go round and round and round
In the circle game
