2009 In Review

I try to do a post every year that is a quick look back at the year before. This time I thought I'd punctuate it with scrapbook pages I made in 2009 that relate to the topics. I'll have that slideshow up tomorrow. For today, the words and a sneak peek.

Overall, it was a quiet year. That may seem odd after you read the list of things that happened this year, but if you compare that to the craziness that usually takes place in a year of my life, trust me, it was quiet!

January brought resurfacing on the Tallyscrapper design team and a new job as a nanny for Ben Heil. I discovered that it isn't just my children I love; its ALLL children!

In February I turned 45 and Jason got his own apartment. I loved seeing this goal he'd had for a couple years come to fruition!

In March we had some sadness. Scott's mom died after a lengthy, difficult illness, and 10 days later my uncle died. Also in this month I left Tallyscrapper and had my 13th wedding anniversary.

In April the kids next door, Konner and Kiley became long term fixtures at our house. We discovered Konner didn't have his own bed or a room to sleep in, and bought a used bed so he could share Andrew's room, having him over often at first. I realized that is wasn't just other babies I loved, but even big, unruly kids!

In May I got my Saturn back and loved the added freedom on the weekends. On Memorial Day weekend Mom and Dad invited us to their cabin, and Andrew and I were able to go. We had a lovely time.

In June we finalized the paperwork and Andrew was accepted to Connections Academy. We had decided to give this new approach to education a try.

In July, after several months of only occasionally scrapbooking, I decided a better use for the sunroom was a library, and the famous Minda Scraproom closed for business. It wasn't until December that the project of dismantling the room would be fully completed. We worked on a new budgeting system and liked it. We tried kayaking for the first time. I embarked wholeheartedly on a total exercise program, making a lifelong commitment to working out every day that I possibly could and harder than I ever thought possible.

In August my bike was stolen. But more happily, we decided to be trendy and have a "staycation" which we thoroughly enjoyed! At the end of the month I finished my time as Ben's nanny and bid a fond farewell.

In September started Connections Academy, went on his first camping trip without us and had a great time, and at the end of the month, he earned a Nintendo DS. For kicks I bought one too. Our friends and family went into shock.

In October I went on a FABULOUS trip to Kansas City, where I reconnected with some highschool friends and just had a wonderful Minda-style vacation. It is not often that one can say that every minute of a vacation was filled with wonder. This is one of those rare moments. At the end of October Andrew requested a costume for Halloween that he designed, called Cabbage Creature. The three of us had a fun time putting that together.

In November I decided THIS was the year, and I wrote, every day, at least 1,670 words a day, thus completing a 50,000 word novel. Since much of it was drivel, it will probably more likely become two short stories pitched to magazines, but it was great to meet this goal I've had for many years. I also ran a 5k with Erin, Scott and Andrew, or more accurately I ran a 5k and then ran back to meet them. It was fun and I'm sure it will become a regular part of our Thanksgiving day activities. We got some upsetting news at the Thanksgiving Dinner table, namely that my parents are planning to move to Arizona in a little over a year.

December this year was one primarily made up of quiet reflection and penny pinching. We were more at peace than usual when money gets tight, and made it through just fine. We also "moved in together". Many know that Scott and I, although very much in love, moved to seperate bedrooms some time ago to promote better sleep patterns. Suddenly toward the end of the year we were both convicted to give togetherness another try. We both are very happy with this "new" arrangement.

Overall, 2009 was an odd year for me. I experienced HUGE spiritual and personal growth, which is sort of a hard thing to document on scrapbook pages. I did work on several spiritual journal pages though, although I'd have to say most of my growth this year happened toward the end, while the pages were all made early in the year. I can look back to where I was at mentally a year ago and see huge changes that have settled in and taken root. These are changes that have made me less susceptible to the winds of change and other people's moods. I would say that this was a year of grounding for me.

The Cuz layouts

There's a million of them (64 to be exact) but here are a few. I didn't have the heart to post them all at a scrapbook website, too much flooding the gallery!

Where have all my words gone?

I may have gone so long in posting here that no one will be left to read this. Where have I been? Well, lately, I just haven't found what I have to say interesting enough to share. Its been a quiet time in my brain, and therefore on my blog. I have a couple of things to say though, so watch here over the next two days and watch my blog rebloom!

In the meantime, here is a quick update of the past month:
Andrew has been officially accepted to Connections Academy, an online school. Since he falls age-wise half way in between 4th and 5th grade, we chose 4th grade to give him a nice easy start to this new way of learning. His first day is September 1.

I have been scrapbooking at a rate more like once every 10 days rather than once a day. It feels more balanced. I also haven't felt the need to spend money on additional scrapbooking supplies. It hasn't been a struggle to cut back, I just haven't felt the need for new stuff. That also feels more balanced.

Scott and I have started talking about dreams and goals again. Nothing concrete on that front, but we are getting things started.

The neighbors K and K are hanging out with us on a regular basis, and we are enjoying their company.

Overall, that is about it. Its been quiet and consistent here and that feels good too.

Now I'm off to sample candy for $100 an hour, have a great day!

What's Up?

I just haven't had the words for here lately...kinda in a verbal doldrums right now.

So what has been happening in my life?

Scott and Lance fixed my car, so tomorrow I get my little green Saturn back.
Andrew and I are reading books at a rate of one a day.
I am experiencing some temptations with allergies this week.
I stumbled across a couple of people from my high school, which is always interesting.
Ben was in high vampire mode today.
I went to bed at 7pm. Now its 2:30am and I'm wide awake.
Erin cut my hair...ahhhh...fresh cut hair!
Mom and Dad invited Andrew and I up to the cabin for Memorial Day weekend.
Andrew has become a bully magnet of late...sigh.
I'm scrapbooking about once a week instead of daily now.
We had church at our house three times in five weeks.
I am rereading Hemingway and realizing that since my highschool days I've outgrown him. Ho hum.
Oprah bought me dinner.
Off to try to sleep some more!

Our New Kids

We certainly still are head over heels in love with our three existing children and our surrogate baby Ben, but we have taken on a couple more halflings in the last few weeks.  Right next door to us, Lisa and her kids moved in last September, and of course thanks to the evil winter, we really didn't see them much.  Then a few weeks ago the kids met up outdoors and we've totally adopted them ever since.

Kgirl and Kboy, are the kinda kids you DREAM of having as next door neighbors.  They are funny and polite and responsible and they both LOVE Andrew and hanging out with us.  We play games, make cookies, go for walks and fight over the computers.  They help with the dishes and cleaning Andrew's room.  Their dad lives a few miles away, so when its his weekend we miss them like crazy.

We've noticed an improvement in Andrew's attitude toward school, and we just goll darn enjoy them.

Today we took a little after school walk at Centennial Lakes and tried out the new extended parkway.  FUN!

13 Years and counting.

Scott and I have acheived 13 years of marriage perfection as of this afternoon!  Although he will be at work all day and night and I'll be at the Waterpark of America with Andrew all afternoon, we will both be thinking back to our first marriage 13 years ago in the judges chambers which was just about making it "legal" and our second marriage 3 years ago where we made it right before God and our church.  I was talking with a friend the other day about "other" men and could honestly tell her that not ONE DAY has gone by since meeting Scott that I've had second thoughts, or looked another man's way for anything other than the scenery of it.  THAT is a powerful romance!  Love you dearest.

He's Moved on Down the Road

We had such an enjoyable time with this little guy, Wednesday during the day, Thursday and Friday overnights.

Well, except between 4-8pm, that was kinda rough, but he's so cute its totally okay!  I drove him over to his grandma and grandpa yesterday afternoon and now they are cooing over him in church.

It was so cute seeing him watch Andrew play and talking to him.

Cuz Broz

These two.  When they get together, they just...work!  They disappear and we hardly get to see them.  I love what amazing men they are both growing into.  So fun to watch, even from the sidelines!

More Wedding

Lisa came over today SANS Benjamin and we got to spend the afternoon doing our favorite thing, laughing and scrapping together!

I did five layouts and so did she.  Above are a couple I did just for me.  A friend of mine challenged me to do a layout with a title from a TV show last week, so I used the title of Dancing with the STARS on the layout from the reception.  Lisa challenged me to do a layout inspired by an altered jar that I fell in love with at Tallyscrapper.com.  I love how that one turned out.

The second layout was from a color challenge I posted on tallyscrapper.com today, to use three colors randomly chosen by dice roll.  My colors for the layout were two tones of green and my title had to contain either the word Midnight or the word Blue.  I love these little 2x3 photos I printed at my local grocery store for cheap!

More Erin

Bree, a sweetheart of a lady I met at tallyscrapper.com designed some cutouts for me for an idea I had that didn't fly. I couldn't let these beautiful samples go to waste though, so I am happy to design some pages around them.

They are so delicate and elegant, so of course I thought of the wedding. The other page is Erin's highschool grad photo. That was taken over seven years ago. Freaky!

Bree, you are a wonder, and thank you so much for helping me!

Watching Mom Make Videos

For tallyscrapper.com, I make video how-tos from time to time. Andrew, who has really been enjoying using our old video camera, wanted to make a how-to video of his own.

Snow Scootering

Andrew has the misfortune of having a Christmastime birthday.  That means all his really big gifts come in the dead of winter.  Last year it was a new bike...which he had to wait nearly 5 months to enjoy outside.  This year it was a scooter.  He wasn't having any 5 month wait this year.  This week we still have a foot or so of snow on the ground, but the sidewalks are relatively clear and the weather was doable, so three days in a row he was out on his scooter, breaking it in.

Its been great as all of us are benefitting from the higher level of natural exercise.

I love his Xtreme Sports attitude!

Jason Update and a change

I'm back, after too long of an absence, and I've made a decision.  Scrapbooking is back on Minda's blog!

My reasons are my own, but hopefully even those who follow my blog who don't scrapbook will enjoy the added burst of color.

February brought some big news for my son Jason; he moved into his own apartment!  I cannot stress enough how important a step I think this is, learning how to manage a household on your own and the internal growth that happens when there is no parent keeping you on track...I'm so very proud of him and his growth.

This week we were invited over to take a peek and he has really started to make it a home.  Of course he has a killer entertainment system, no surprises there, and we quickly got caught up in watching a bluray version of Phantom of the Opera.  Now I see what all the fuss is about!

Anyway, here is a little scrapbook page tribute to this big move for Jason.  For the scrap techies, I used a piece of cardboard, centered and affixed my title letters and then painted the whole thing the same color.  This is a technique I learned from Jen over at Tallyscrapper.com, where all my scrappy friends hang out.  Once it was dry I took a brown ink pad and scrubbed it over the title to give it a little more depth, then added some layered pen work and the photos.  Nice and simple!

Erin and Lance are dealing with an out of order bathroom as they deal with a leak and mold issue...yes, in a one bathroom house!  Jason is helping out when he can between starting his new job at the Eagan Little Caesars.

Today is my daddy's birthday, and he just got home from a cruise.  I haven't read mom's whole post about it, but I guess it wasn't their best cruise.

Thanks for sticking by this blog even with my huge absences, I'll try to refocus here a bit going forward!

Trudging Through the Tundra...

As told by Andrew---

We went to the moon and walked on the solar snow today.  Not really, but we did go for a snowy walk.  I wanted to get my crabbiness about homeschool out before we did our work.  Little did I know that I would want to hitch a ride even before we were half way done.

Mom made it fun by adding in a trip to McDonalds and to get a movie too.  At McDonalds mom blow dried my boots in the bathroom and gave me her dry socks.  I decided that I want mukluk boots like hers because her feet never get cold or wet when we walk.  We ate two orders of french fries; mommy ate the majority of the first order, then I ate most of the second order.  Mom taught me about McGyver when we outfitted my boots with ugly McDs bibs to keep my feet dry.

We ran to the move store being chased by intergalactic space aliens, and looked at the WII games.  The movie I picked out was Star Wars Phantom Menace.

On our way to the grocery store, we were chased by people wanting us to take surveys, and then we searched all over the grocery store for dry, robotic gloves.  Foiled!

Trudging back over the moon's surface was TERRIBLE!   All our energy was wiped out by the survey and intergalactic chases.

When we arrived home, wet, cold and dizzy with tiredness, we crashed against our hover bubble couch.

Erin is a Quarter Century!

Erin had her 25th this Sunday...I wonder if she has officially reached an age now where I need to stop announcing her age...we'll call this the last announcement!

Photo Tag

A consistent blog reader of mine, Adrienne, tagged me!  I won't continue this on, but I'll play along with her, as I'm a big fan.

The challenge was to go to the photos on my computer, and in the sixth folder pull out the 6th photo on the list.  Of course I don't store photos on my com
puter anymore, but I had just downloaded a folder of circus photos to do some circus pages for Andrew, and so I'll use that folder.

Here is what was in the 6th spot:

Andrew went to a nationally recognized circus school for two years.  We lived right near the tent in which the lessons were given and every year there was a show.  All the instructors were world class former circus performers, most having traveled with shows like Dralion.  Andrew vacillated between totally loving it and being shy and scared.  There were some days we had to practically pry his hands from us and bring him out to the circle, others that he begged to go more than once a week.  This photo was taken during the dress rehearsal for the end of year show.  He did so well and we were super proud of him.

Happy Birthday He's Nine!

And he's out sledding with his papa and friends right now!  We're kinda spreading his birthday celebration out over several days, tomorrow he and I are going to toys R us to use his gift certificate, Sunday he gets breakfast in bed, Monday its dinner at the Mall of America and one friend for ride at the theme park,  and hopefully Tuesday night will be a small family gathering!

He really is growing both in maturity and height right now.  We love him like crazy!
